On Your Radar: Sunday

And just like that, it’s already Sunday. I have no clue where SunFest weekend went and I’m pretty sad it’s almost over. But now’s our chance to really take advantage of all the great music going on around us. I’m here to help you do that with a final installment of On Your Radar — acts performing today that you might not know yet, but will be stoked you heard about by the end of the day.

Jesse Royal

As Vice’s music outlet, Noisey, puts it, “Winter is over and sunshine is here, so it’s time to stop worrying and start listening to Jesse Royal.” The reggae artist, who has been featured on Viceland, is from Kingston, Jamaica and started making music around 2012. Royal’s song, “Cool & Deadly” was produced by none other than Damian Marley and will be featured on an upcoming episode of Noisey Jamaica. Royal has this cool swagger about him, walking around Jamaica in his Ray-Ban Clubmasters. TV shows are excited to share his story and so is SunFest. This is a set you won’t want to miss.

The Worn Flints

With its harmonies, heavy guitar and additional elements like flute samples, The Worn Flints sound like something right out of the 60’s. The rock-psych trio from Columbus, Ohio joined the Alabama Shakes for its two sold out Florida dates this past Friday and Saturday, and now its closing out the weekend with a set on our own stage. The band’s EP, “Second Sun,” released in June 2015 and has gained the band slots on festivals like SXSW and now, SunFest.

Ria Mae

Ria Mae, a Canadian pop artist from Nova Scotia is set to grace SunFest’s stage today. There, she’ll perform songs like her single, “Gold,” a Lilly-Allen-esque track with an alternative rock feel and a driving piano. The artist and her band have been touring the states lately, recently stopping in North and South Carolina where she’s made new discoveries — like boiled peanuts. Now, it’s time for Mae to leave her mark in Florida and for SunFest to leave its mark on Mae. Maybe one of those frozen lemonades will do the trick.

SEE HER LIVE: JetBlue stage, 5:00 p.m.

Sons of Mystro

This Hollywood, Florida based duo say that they “make the violin sing!” Sons of Mystro are two brothers, Malcolm and Umoja, born to a Barbadian mother and Jamaican father. The siblings honed in on their love for the violin at Dillard High School For the Performing Arts, and have been gigging since 2010. They’ve performed at various festivals including the One Love Reggae Fest and more. Sons of Mystro’s ‘thing’ is to take popular songs, but express themselves by replacing the vocal lines with violin riffs. See it for yourself today.
