Reggae for Saturday Morning

Reggae music remains a pillar of SunFest. Each year we are treated to acts like The Wailers, Ziggy and Damian Marley, SOJA, Iration, 311, Slightly Stoopid, and Morning Fatty. The island notes and flavors are simply perfect for our seaside stages, and this year is no exception. The Ford Stage will be groovin’ this morning with two great acts: Stick Figure and Dirty Heads.

Scott Woodruff is the relaxed leader of Stick Figure, a reggae/dub band based in Southern Cali. Formed in 2006, the five-piece act has released six full-length albums to date.

Woodruff, the shaggy-haired singer, has been experimenting with music for most of his life. In an interview with LiveForLiveMusic.com, he shared that he first learned the drums in fourth grade, and would spend time recording both guitar and drums to get the sound desired.

Fast forward, and Woodruff and his bandmates can usually be found in good company. The group has toured with fellow artists (and many SunFest veterans) Rebelution, Slightly Stoopid, Passafire, and Tribal Seeds. Also touring with Stick Figure? Cocoa, the darling and very well-behaved Australian Shepherd, who frequently joins the band on stage. (New goal: Instagram that dog.)

IMG_7157.JPGThe band will warm up the Ford Stage at 2:30 p.m., ahead of their friends, Dirty Heads. By the way, Huntington Beach’s Dirty Heads are playing a set longer than most of our headliners. For an hour and a half, you will hear the sun-kissed tunes of this seasoned act.

You’ll want to make time to arrive early and get in the gates. If you’re hungry, the closest food area to the Ford Stage is the new Fueling Station. Last night, during Flo Rida, my stomach overpowered my ears and I was able to snag a delicious pulled pork sandwich from Sweet Daddy’s BBQ– and then immediately go back to dancing. Would recommend, 10 out of 10.
