Things got Logical: Day One with Logic

Earlier this year, when the Jacksonville Jaguars fell out of the playoffs after becoming painstakingly close to making the Super Bowl, my boyfriend and his group of friends — who are all diehard fans — experienced a dark day.

That was the first time I really sat and processed the lyrics to Logic’s “1-800-273-8255.” Droves of our friends were posting videos on Twitter and Snapchat — many in black and white because #moody, hoodies up and the pop singer’s smooth, somber voice rolling over the track.

There’s so much unfiltered and honest approachability when it comes to Logic — in both his music and his persona — whether you’re 30 or 13. Last night, we saw that firsthand.

The rapper and singer wore a black t-shirt, skinny jeans and sneakers on night one of our music festival. He approached Marley, a young girl, hoisted on her dad’s shoulders and spoke to her in front of the crowd.

“I love you so much and I love listening to your music because I have anxiety and it helps me with that,” the 13-year-old blurted out. The artist thanked her and complimented her nails. It wasn’t even surprising, it felt natural.

That’s what a night with Logic headlining the Ford stage looked like. Moment after moment, what was slated as a show for the crowd evolved into the crowd putting a show on for the 28-year-old superstar.

“If you came here, I want you to have fun,” the artist said. “Everyone in the crowd, look to the person to your right, now your left. Now, whether you know those people or not, tonight, they’re your family.”

Logic continued, “you’re here. I want everyone to feel safe and have a good time.”

As the rapper rolled through songs like “44 More,” “Everybody” and “Black SpiderMan,” he constantly would pull out his own phone to film the SunFest crowd. “This is going on my Instagram, he’d announce.” (He delivered, by the way. It did go on his Instagram. I implore you to watch his story.)

I Love My Job

It happened again when he spotted a sign in the crowd: “Make me ‘Mom of the Year,’ get my son to rap with you.” Logic complied. He pulled 16-year-old Liam on stage to do a verse from his 2014 debut single, “Under Pressure.”

“I’m shaking right now,” Liam said, clad in a Logic t-shirt, barely gripping the mic. “That’s OK,” Logic told him. “We’ve got your back.” The artist broke out his cell phone again as Liam won over the crowd. “Oh my God!” was all he could keep repeating.

Throughout the night, Logic continued to make the show about his fans. He highlighted Zuzu, 17, David, 30, and Matt, 25, who the artist knew on a first-name basis because Matt has been to eight of his performances.

“I’m having a blast,” he told the crowd. “This is so awesome … I traveled all the way across the country to perform for you today.

The artist closed his hour and 15 minute long set with his Grammy nominated hit, 1-800-273-8255,” followed by “Everyday.”

The crowd broke out their phones to light up the night. He did the same. And it all made sense. You could even say it was logical.
