Strumbellas

Wednesday in Review: The Strumbellas

One day done! SunFest kicked off yesterday with spectacular weather, a hat-snatching breeze, and incredible sounds.

Prepping the Ford Stage for Weezer was Canadian folk-rockers The Strumbellas. This Toronto-based band formed in 2008, but recently their singles “We Don’t Know” and “Spirits” have settled into the hearts of millions.

The six-piece band falls into the same genres as the Lumineers, The Head and the Heart, and Vance Joy– so artists we already dearly love.

119_CAB17“We’re so happy to be here,” lead singer and guitarist Simon Ward told the crowd. “I went to the beach…in Florida! I got a sunburn! That’s exciting for a Canadian.”

After performing their track “End of an Era,” vocals and keyboardist Dave Ritter also spoke of beach side effects. He told the crowd that his eyes were closed through most of the song, leading many to assume it was an emotional performance. Nope, he said. He just has sunscreen in his eyes.

As the sun set, casting a hazy, golden glow over the waterfront, the energetic band continued to play. They performed “We Don’t Know,” “Rhinestone” (with a beautiful introduction by the band’s violinist Isabel “Izzy” Ritchie), “Wild Sun,” and “Sherriff.” And of course, their singles mentioned above.

The band, which has been together for almost a decade, might still be new for many Americans. When you see them, you will inevitably be impressed be their confidence, seasoned skill, and banter on stage. I’m relieved they are also set to play Bonnaroo, Free Press Summer Fest, and Governor’s Ball this year because they are destined for festivals– big stages, bright lights, and massive, sing-a-long crowds.129_CAB17

Although, I’m confident they’re going to remember Florida for quite some time.

“We love coming to the beach,” Ward said. “I saw some lizards! I collected some shells! We had a great time.”

By my math sunburns, spotting lizards, and eyeball-burning sunscreen makes you an honorary Floridian. Strumbellas, you and your beautiful music are welcome here anytime. We hope we see you again soon.
